The story takes place in the late 1930s at Jekyll Island. Members who purchase the island construct a Clubhouse so they can getaway from the northern winds and escape life stresses. Because the Clubhouse has become outgrown, some of the members decide to build private cottages to avoid staying at the Clubhouse. Therefore, a few of the island workers inhabited the island year round.
Jonathan Blake has been coming to the island since he was a child. He spends time with his grandparents who are island workers because the place serves as a sanctuary away from the cares of the world. One day down at the beach, he spies a young lady wading along the oceanfront collecting seashells. He has not spoken to her. His imagination begins running wild causing him to eagerly acquaint himself with her before his thoughts become untamed.
Jonathan has vowed never to love a woman. He prefers to keep his distance until one day he casually approaches Jane Adams. Remembering her face keeps his emotions running wild so maybe distancing is not the answer. Deep inside, he is convinced of his true need of her.
